Currently Accepting:

  • PhD students applying to the Joint Doctoral Program in Public Health or the PhD Public Health program with a concentration in Health Services Research and Implementation Science (HSRIS)
  • MPH students (current students looking for capstone or thesis committee members or chair)
  • Undergraduates interested in research

Please email me if you are interested in working with me. I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner, and we can assess your fit with the lab. At this time, most of the lab openings are volunteer or for course credit. Unfortunately, I can't always accept all students that may want to participate in the lab. This doesn't indicate that you are not well-suited for research but rather that I either don't have the openings or the kind of skills you wish to build are likely better achieved in a different lab under different mentorship.

Public Health PhD Programs
Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health
The Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health program with a concentration in Health Services Research and Implementation Science (HSRIS) is designed to address the social determinants of health through the exercise of community engaged research in both traditional and non-traditional health service settings. The program provides an educational experience that is transdisciplinary, involving faculty representing different academic disciplines collectively engaged in creating new scientific approaches to addressing the most pressing health care needs of our time; translational, by linking the development of innovative and evidence-based programs, policies and practices designed to improve health care with their implementation and sustainment in real-word settings; and team-based, emphasizing the collaborative engagement of researchers and health care providers with the communities they serve.

Joint Doctoral Program in Public Health
A Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health is offered by the joint faculties of the UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science and the School of Public Health at San Diego State University, with assistance from other departments and schools across both universities.

Prospective PhD Students: When you apply for the above program(s), please indicate you'd like to work with me in your application package.

Other Disciplines and Degree Programs
Because my work is inherently transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary, you may wish to work with me if you are in a major outside of Public Health. I do work with students from all different disciplines. As an undergraduate, you can take DSGN 199 credit for independent study (and/or enroll in the Design Minor if you wish), and as a graduate student, you can take DSGN 299 credit for independent study (and/or enroll in the Human-Centered Design Specialization if you wish). Unfortunately, however, I am unable to serve as the primary advisor for students outside of Public Health. If there is a good fit, you may consider having me as a co-advisor with a primary advisor in your degree program.
