Mental Health in Design Lab

There is no health without mental health. [WHO]
Thus, there is no healthy technology interaction without considering mental health, including psychological and emotional well-being.

If we want to improve the lives and health of people, we need to consider mental health at the forefront of all technology design and interaction.

Understanding psychological, emotional, & social needs
= Better, more effective technology

Technology is pervasive.

Mental health matters.

77%
of US smartphone owners have looked up health information online
[Pew Research, 2013]

72%
of people in the US use social media
[Statista, 2018]

58%
of people in the US have downloaded a health app
[Krebs & Duncan, 2015]

Mental health impacts ALL aspects of our lives.

More than 50%
of people in the US will be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their lifetime [CDC]

45,700,000
of US adults in a given year experience mental illness [NIMH, 2016]

Yet treatment rates are low.
